[English]

This study investigates the position and techniques of chronogram composition (mādda-tārīkh) in the Dīvān of Mohammad Qāsem Arsalān Ṭūsī, a tenth-century AH Iranian poet associated with the court of Emperor Akbar. Writing during the transition toward the Indian Style, he mainly followed the Iraqi Style and occasionally adopted the School of Occurrence. Although the date of his death remains disputed, he was renowned for his expertise in paleography, calligraphy, and chronogram composition. Using a descriptive-analytical method based on documentary research, this study examines the chronograms extracted from the manuscript of Arsalān’s Dīvān (Majles Library, MS No. 942, Folder 15242). The findings show that he employed diverse structural and artistic techniques, including izhār al-muḍmar, taʿmiya, numerical ambiguity, the omission and addition of letters, and emphatic and double chronograms. These chronograms mainly commemorate major events during Akbar’s reign, such as the conquest of Bengal and Gaur (982 AH), the births of royal princes, the completion of imperial buildings, and the compilation of the poet’s Dīvān. They constitute valuable historical evidence for Akbar’s period and demonstrate the artistic sophistication of chronogram composition in the tenth century AH. The study also highlights the historical and discursive functions of chronograms, including legitimizing political authority, promoting imperial power, and reinforcing the poet’s position as a court historian. The evidence further indicates that Arsalān was alive until 986 AH and probably died around 995 AH.
