Abstract
Paronomasia has long been a point of contention among rhetorical scholars due to its many branches and subcategories. Disagreements, ranging from general principles to specific details, have made systematic analysis difficult. This complexity stems from two main factors: first, the diverse and sometimes contradictory classifications of paronomasia’s branches; second, disputes over definitions, identification of instances, and evidence analysis. Additional challenges include the abundance of paronomasia examples in literary texts, especially poetry, and fundamental differences in scholars’ analytical methods. Consequently, no clear, uniform, or agreed-upon rules exist for identifying, defining, or distinguishing its types posing a fundamental challenge in rhetorical studies.
Using a descriptive-analytical method and drawing on Arabic and Persian rhetorical traditions, this study aims to identify gaps, ambiguities, and epistemological barriers that have prevented a coherent theoretical formulation of paronomasia. The findings reveal that cognitive deficiencies related to this device can be classified across four levels: definition, typology, function, and rhetorical evaluation. This classification provides the necessary groundwork for developing an epistemology based theoretical framework, offering a structured approach to resolving longstanding ambiguities surrounding this rhetorical device.
