Esma'il Kho'i (1938-2021), a prominent contemporary poet, published eight collections of poetry prior to the 1979 Revolution in Iran. His final pre-revolutionary work, Mā Būdegān, was composed in May 1973 and published in 1978. Mā Būdegān is a long Nimaic poem in five sections, in which the poet symbolically describes the intellectual community of the era and predicts an imminent revolution.
Using a statistical method and a layered stylistics approach, this study calculates and records the frequency of recurring features in Mā Būdegān to identify the salient stylistic characteristics of Kho'i’s poetry at the phonetic, lexical, and syntactic levels. Furthermore, it provides a descriptive-analytical account of the nexus between language and content.
The research findings indicate that at the phonetic level, the poet demonstrates a proclivity for pun (paronomasia), alliteration, and consonance. By merging certain conjunctions and prepositions with subsequent words, he evokes the rhythmic qualities of classical poetry. At the lexical level, in addition to archaism and purism (Sare-gara’i), Kho'i tends to employ innovative sensory compounds with metaphorical significance to render abstract philosophical and social concepts more tangible. At the syntactic level, the poet intentionally disrupts syntactic order to emphasize the specific temporal and situational context of the contemporary intellectual class. The predominance of the "passive grammatical voice" reflects the crisis of passivity among intellectuals of that period, while the frequency of the indicative mood portrays the reporting of their mundane, tavern-centered lives as both factual and decisive.
