Popular wisdom, in the form of proverbs and idioms, is a complete mirror of the culture, thought, language, and lived experiences of every nation. The travelogues of European travelers who visited Iran in various historical periods are considered among the valuable and precious sources for understanding this part of Iranian culture, especially during the Safavid and Qajar eras. These texts, sometimes with the aim of precise documentation and sometimes out of wonder, praise, or even cultural judgments, reflect an external view of the hidden layers of popular language and the Iranian mental structure. This article focuses on analyzing the meaning, historical roots, practical contexts, social origins, and communicative functions of a number of proverbs and idioms recorded in the travelogues of Shirley, Tavernier, and Olearius. The aim of this research is to shed light on aspects of the Iranian worldview during the period under consideration, through the concepts reflected in these selections of popular wisdom; concepts that, both in their linguistic structure and in their cultural and historical context, are a reflection of the social realities and collective spirit of that era.
